Moving to Joensuu

If you want to move to Finland, in most cases you will need a residence permit. Matters related to residence permits are handled by Finnish embassies abroad and the Finnish Immigration Service.

If you are an EU citizen and spend more than three months in Finland, please visit the Finnish Immigration Service or do the registration online. There is no servicepoint in Joensuu. The closest ones are in Kuopio and Lappeenranta.

Registering as a resident

If you are moving to Joensuu permanently, you must register as a resident of the municipality. You can register at the Local Register Office of East Finland (Itä-Suomen maistraatti).

When you go to the Local Register Office, please take the following documents with you:

  • proof of identity (a passport, for example)
  • a residence permit and a residence card (if you need a residence permit in Finland)
  • a certificate of registration of a residence permit (if you are an EU citizen)
  • a marriage certificate
  • your children's birth certificates

Please note that foreign documents must be legalised.

Residence permit extension

If you live in Joensuu and apply for

  • a residence permit extension
  • a permanent residence permit
  • an identity card of a foreign national
  • a residence card for a family member of an EU citizen

you must visit the Finnish Immigration Service. There is no servicepoint in Joensuu. The closest servicepoints are in Kuopio and Lappeenranta.
