Health services in Joensuu

The social and health services in Joensuu are produced by Siun sote. There are eight health centres in various parts of Joensuu. Each health centre has its own telephone number for appointments to see a nurse or a doctor. Make an appointment with your local health centre.

There are also companies that offer private health care services in Joensuu, such as Ite, Terveystalo and Pohjois-Karjalan Terveyspalvelut.

Emergency services

Health centres are closed in the evenings and on weekends. In the evenings and on weekends, sudden illnesses and accidents will be treated at the emergency services of North Karelia Central Hospital.

Emergency services are meant for patients whose illness requires urgent evaluation and treatment.

Children’s health

If a child falls ill, contact the local health centre, if necessary.

Child health clinics provide services for children under school age and their families. You can ask for advice by calling your local child health clinic on weekdays at 12–13.

A child's health, growth and development are monitored with the help of regular visits to a child health clinic. A public health nurse gives vaccinations to the child based on his or her age.

A child who has suddenly fallen ill cannot be treated at a child health clinic, but you can ask for advice by calling a public health nurse at the clinic.

Dental care

If you need dental care that is not urgent, please call the centralised appointment booking service for dental services.

There are eight dental clinics in various parts of Joensuu. Dental clinics provide first aid in the case of sudden dental pain and accidents involving teeth. If you need urgent dental care, please call the appointment booking service from 8.00 on weekdays to make an appointment with a dental clinic.

Emergency dental care is provided by the dental clinic of the health centre of Siilainen (Noljakantie 17a).

There are also several private dentists and dental clinics that provide emergency dental care in Joensuu.

Mental health

If you need mental help and support, you can make an appointment to see a doctor at a health centre. A doctor will assess the situation. If necessary, the doctor will give you a referral for special psychiatric treatment.

In acute situations, contact the emergency services of a health centre or the central hospital's intensive outpatient unit.

Sexual health

In matters related to family planning and contraception, please contact your local health centre or a family planning clinic. You can make an appointment at a family planning clinic if you need contraception. If you are considering an abortion, or if you suspect that you have a sexually transmitted disease, contact a health centre. You can also make an appointment for a general practitioner at a health centre for a gynaecological or urological examination.

When you are expecting a baby

Contact a maternity clinic, when you notice that you are pregnant. The well-being of the mother, baby and the whole family is monitored at a maternity clinic during pregnancy. You can ask for instructions by phone from your local maternity clinic.

Childbirth

The maternity ward of North Karelia Central Hospital is open at all times. You can call the maternity ward when you are about to set off for the hospital to give birth, or if you want to ask for advice.

Medication

You can buy medicine from pharmacies. Information on pharmacies in Joensuu is available on the Internet. You can go to any pharmacy. You can also visit a pharmacy in a municipality other than the one in which you reside.

Disabled persons

A disabled person who lives in Joensuu is entitled to use services on similar grounds to other residents. However, because of his or her disability or illness, the person may also require services provided by the disability services. Joensuu Disability Services Office is responsible for disability services in Joensuu and you can apply for their services and support measures from the office.

If you are disabled, you can apply for various services from the Disability Services Office. These services include, for example:

  • transport services
  • remodelling and necessary equipment for a home
  • equipment and devices for daily activities
  • personal assistance and daytime activities
  • service housing
  • informal care allowance for persons under the age of 65
  • work activities.

You can also apply for housing services, short-term and temporary care and non-institutional care guidance from the Disability Services Office.
