Medicines are sold in pharmacies. A doctor’s prescription is required for certain medicines. Some medicines are sold without a prescription.
Health insurance will reimburse you with a part of the costs of many medicines. If you have a Kela Card, you belong to the health insurance scheme. Bring your Kela Card with you when going to the pharmacy. Only medicine prescribed by a doctor will be reimbursed. The medicine for certain difficult diseases are reimbursed almost fully.
At pharmacies you have the opportunity to choose a cheaper medicine than the one prescribed by the doctor, provided that both medicines contain the same effective ingredients. The pharmacy staff informs the customer as to whether a cheaper alternative exists.
