What to do in an emergency
General emergency phone number 112
Emergency number for the police 112
In case of emergency dial 112 on a telephone.
Call the emergency number in urgent, real emergencies: when life, health, property or the environment is under threat or in danger or there is real reason to assume that this is the case.
What happens when you call 112:
- Make the call yourself if you can.
- Tell the operator what has happened.
- Tell the exact location of the emergency: address and municipality.
- Answer any questions.
- Follow the instructions given.
- Do not hang up before the operator gives you permission to do so.
General alarm signal
The general alarm signal is either a continuous rising and falling siren sound or an announcement made by the authorities through loudspeakers.
What to do when you hear the general alarm signal:
- Go indoors. Stay indoors.
- Close the doors, windows and air vents, and turn off air conditioners.
- Turn on the radio and calmly wait for further instructions.
- Avoid using the telephone, so as not to overload the lines.
- Do not leave the area without a specific order from the authorities so as not to put yourself in unnecessary danger.
Gas alert
During a gas alert you will hear the general alarm signal. Follow the instructions given above. In addition:
If you are indoors
and you smell gas, breathe through a wet cloth. Stay on the upper floors of your building until the danger is declared to be over. Listen to the radio.
If you are outdoors and cannot go in
move at a brisk pace crosswind from under the gas cloud. Move towards the highest point in the terrain (such as a hill top). Breathe through a wet cloth or a tuft of grass, moss or peat.
Radiation alert
During a radiation alert you will hear the general alarm signal. Further information will be given without delay.
