Health centre (Terveysasema, terveyskeskus)

Main health centres include receptions for a general practitioner, a nurse, a public health nurse and a dentist, for example. Health centres refer customers to specialised medical care as required. Residents attend a doctor in their own neighbourhood area.

Making an appointment at the health centre (Ajan varaaminen terveysasemalle)

Appointments at the health centre are made by telephoning the appropriate appointments office. You must give you personal ID when making an appointment. Your personal ID appears on your Kela card. You must also give your home address, as this will determine which doctor you visit.

The health centre has four appointments offices for doctors or nurses.

The appropriate office depends on which part of Savonlinna you live in. Appointments may be made Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–3.30 p.m.

First aid can be obtained in the case of an accident, a sudden illness or if you need urgent medical treatment the same day

Emergency services are provided by the Savonlinna Central Hospital joint health care emergency service.

The number to call is 015 527 7777. Your call will be answered by a nurse who will advise you.

If necessary the nurse will make an appointment for you with the doctor.

Urgent medical treatment (Kiireellinen sairaanhoito)

Call the general emergency number 112 in all cases of emergency.

Whenever an ambulance is required, call 112.

If you need to call an ambulance, give the following information over the phone:

• your own name
• your address
• the nature of the emergency and why help is needed urgently.

If the situation does not require an ambulance, first call the number of the emergency health services to obtain further instructions.

Urgent dental treatment (Kiireellinen hammashoito)

Urgent dental treatment can be obtained from the dental clinic at the main health centre. The clinic also handles non-urgent dental treatment.

Emergency services are available Mon–Fri 8 a.m.–3 p.m.

Private health care services in Savonlinna are provided by the following medical centres:

Access to treatment is more readily available, but treatment fees are higher than at the health centre.

Specialised medical care is provided by the Savonlinna Central Hospital.

Access to specialised care requires a referral from a doctor at the health centre or from a private doctor.

In urgent cases treatment can also be made available to foreigners only temporarily resident in Savonlinna. A fee is always charged for hospital treatment.
 

Persons from EU and EEA Member States, the Nordic countries, Switzerland and Australia can obtain treatment at the same cost as persons residing permanently in Finland, providing they possess the necessary documents, such as a European Health Insurance Card (eurooppalainen sairaanhoitokortti).

When your child falls ill (Kun lapsi sairastuu)

Should your child fall ill, where necessary contact the emergency services at the main health centre, tel. 015 5277106, 8 a.m.–3.30 p.m.

Outside these hours, except at night, contact the joint health care emergency services at Savonlinna Central Hospital, tel. 015 527 7777.

Mental health problems, crises (Mielenterveysongelmat, kriisitilanteet)

Help with mental health problems is available from the Savonlinna health centre.

An appointment can be made with a nurse or with a psychologist. A health centre fee will be charged for a doctor’s appointment. Other services are free of charge.

The Savonlinna Crisis Centre provides help and support if you or a loved one are in crisis. You can call if you need someone to listen. You can also make an appointment with a crisis worker.

Psychiatric nursing (Psykiatrinen sairaanhoito)

Specialist psychiatric nursing requires a referral from a doctor at the health centre or from a private doctor. Access to treatment is by first making an appointment with a doctor at the health centre, when the need for treatment will be assessed.

If you or a member of your family have problems with alcohol or illegal drugs or abuse of prescription drugs, there is help available.
Entering treatment is voluntary and free of charge.
Services are also available to family members of substance abusers.

Gynaecological services (Gynekologipalvelut)

In case of gynaecological problems, contact the health centre for examination by a general practitioner. There are no specialised gynaecologists practising at health centres, however.

Sexually transmitted diseases (Sukupuolitaudit)

Gynaecological and urological problems can be referred to the health centre.
