Health in Mikkeli (Terveys Mikkelissä)

The Ensineuvo (First Help) telephone service (015 211 411) can always be called when needing information about health services or directions for treating illness. The service is available in Finnish and English.

The City of Mikkeli One Stop Service Point provides help and advice where necessary in questions relating to the availability of health services.


Clinic, health care centre (Terveysasema, terveyskeskus)


The Pankalampi Main Health Centre has receptions for, among others, a general practitioner, nurse, public health nurse, and dentist. The health centre can also refer customers for specialised medical care where necessary. Residents attend a doctor in the area where they live.

Booking an appointment at the health centre (Ajan varaaminen terveysasemalle)

Appointments are made at the health centre by phoning the appointment office (ajanvaraustoimisto). When you make an appointment you will need to give your personal ID, which you will find on your Kela card. Also state your address, as you will be assigned a doctor according to your area of residence.

The health centre has two appointment offices for doctors or nurses. The appropriate appointment office will depend on where in Mikkeli you live.

First aid or urgent medical treatment (Ensiapu eli kiireellinen sairaanhoito)


You can obtain first aid when you have been involved in an accident, succumb to a sudden illness, or need urgent, same-day treatment.

In emergencies, always call the emergency number 112.
An ambulance is ordered from emergency number 112.

A referral from a doctor is required before receiving specialised medical care, except in cases of sudden, life-threatening situations.

Private health services in Mikkeli are provided, for example, by the following medical centres:
Terveystalo and Marskin lääkärikeskus.

Access to treatment is quicker at a private medical centre, but the fees are much higher than at the health centre.

Specialised medical care is provided at Mikkeli Central Hospital.
Access to treatment requires a referral from the health care centre physician or private physician.

In urgent cases, a foreigner who is residing only temporarily in Mikkeli can also receive medical treatment. A fee is always charged for medical treatment.

Persons from EU and ETA countries, the Nordic countries, Switzerland and Australia can receive care at the same price as paid by people residing permanently in Finland, providing they are in possession of the required documents.

School health care is responsible for the preventive health care of school children.

Emergency psychiatric crisis treatment is provided by the Acute Team (Akuuttityöryhmä).
Contact can be made directly without the need for a referral.

Help for mental health problems can be obtained from the Mikkeli health centre. Appointments with a nurse or psychologist can be made using the Ensineuvo (First Help) number, tel. 015 211411.

A health centre fee will be charged for a doctor’s visit. Other services are free of charge.


Mental health services for children and families (Lasten ja lapsiperheiden mielenterveyspalvelut)
The child and youth development support unit provides child guidance and family advice, clinical psychologist and speech therapy services for children under 18 years of age, young people and their families. More information in Finnish from the City of Mikkeli webpages.

Psychiatric nursing (Psykiatrinen sairaanhoito)

Specialised psychiatric nursing requires a referral from a physician at a health centre or from a private physician.
Access is via a doctor’s appointment at the health centre, when the need for treatment will be assessed. In Mikkeli psychiatric hospital care is available to children, young people, and adults.

Couple relationship problems (Parisuhteen ongelmat)
Help and advice for couples with relationship problems can be obtained, for example, from the Family Counselling Centre. Contact details on the Mikkeli parish website in Finnish.

Psychotherapy (Psykoterapia)
Long-term psychotherapy is not part of primary health care. More information on applying for psychotherapy is available, for example, from the Kela website in Finnish.

Substance Abuse Services (Päihdepalvelut)
The Info Bank Crises webpage contains further information on alcohol and drug issues.

Substance in this context refers to alcohol, illegal drugs or prescription drugs. If someone or a member of the family has problems with alcohol or illegal drugs, or abuse of prescription drugs, then help is available. Treatment is voluntary and no payment is necessary. The services are also available to family members of substance abusers.

Substance abuse services are provided by health centres, social workers, health clinics, and school and student health care. Where necessary, customers are referred to specialised substance abuse services.

Sexual Health (Seksuaalisuus)
Help with contraception and family planning can be obtained from the family planning clinic.

Gynaecology and urology services (Gynekologi- ja urologipalvelut)
Those with gynaecological and urological problems can turn to the health centre, where they will be examined by a general practitioner. Health centres, however, do not employ specialised gynaecologists or urologists.

Venereal diseases (Sukupuolitaudit)
The health centre will also provide treatment for ailments caused by venereal disease.
