Health Centres

Health centres consist, for example, of doctors’, nurses’ and public health nurses’ receptions. Where necessary, patients are forwarded from the health centre for specialist medical treatment. Espoo inhabitants attend the health centre for their own area.

Emergency Medical Services

Health centres are closed in the evening and at the weekend. During these times, acute illnesses and accidents are dealt with by emergency medical services at Jorvi hospital. When a Child Falls Ill

If your child should fall ill, contact the nearest health centre where necessary, or call the 24-hour health counselling service on (09)  10023. Calls outside office hours may also be made to emergency care at Jorvi Hospital , tel. (09)  4718 3300. Service is available in Finnish and Swedish and, generally, also in English.

School health care

Psychiatric nursing

Specialist psychiatric nursing requires a referral from a doctor at the health centre or from a private doctor. In Espoo, psychiatric nursing is provided at Jorvi Hospital and through outpatient care in the local Jorvi outpatient clinics. Assessment of the need for psychiatric nursing is carried out at Jorvi Hospital psychiatric outpatient unit on weekdays 8 a.m.-4 p.m., tel. (09)  861 3040.

Mental health services for children and families

Family Advice Centres provide services for children under 13 years of age, and for families with children, who experience conflict and problems which disrupt their daily lives. Relationship problems

Couples can apply for help and guidance, for example, from the Family Federation (Väestöliitto), other organisations and from private therapists.

Psychotherapy

Long-term psychotherapy is not available under basic health care. Further information about applying for psychotherapy can be obtained, for example, from the Social Insurance Institution (Kela).

Dental Care

Telephone appointments for dental care can be made using the central reservation number , tel. (09) 8163 0300 (7.45 a.m.-3 p.m.). In acute cases urgent treatment can be obtained during weekdays for adults at Kilo Health Care and Social Services Centre (Kilon sosiaali- ja terveysasema), and for children and adolescents at a dental practice in the area where they live. During weekends and public holidays emergency dental care for all Espoo citizens is provided at Puolarmetsä Dental Clinic (Puolarmetsän hammashoitola).

Those studying in Espoo are generally entitled to dental care at the dental clinic nearest to the place where they live or to the place of study.

Substance Abuse Services

Substance abuse services are provided by health centres, social workers, pre-natal and child care services and student health care. Where necessary, basic services will refer customers to specialist services in substance abuse.

EMPPU treatment centre (Palvelukeskus EMPPU) provides services for adult residents of Espoo suffering from depression and substance abuse. More information on EMPPU on the City of Espoo website in Finnish and English .

EMPPU also provides telephone advice on the mental health and substance abuse services of Espoo. Counselling is available in Finnish and English on 09 8163 1342 or 050 320 9504, weekdays 9.00 a.m-7 p.m. and weekends 12.00 noon-4.00 p.m.

Sexuality

Help with family planning and contraception can be obtained through contraceptive advice given at the health centre. One of the aims of contraceptive advice is to prevent the transmission of venereal diseases. Further information in Finnish  and Swedish.

Gynaecological services

In case of gynaecological problems contact the health centre for an examination by a general practitioner. There are no specialised gynaecologists practising at health centres, however.

Venereal diseases

Contact the health centre in case of gynaecological or urological problems. Espoo residents may also visit the Outpatient Clinic for Venereal Diseases (Sukupuolitautien poliklinikka) in Helsinki without the need for a doctor’s referral.
