Registration (Rekisteröityminen)
An immigrant becomes a municipal resident once he or she is entered in the population register. There are three things you must do when you move to Savonlinna:
Visit the local register office (address Olavinkatu 46 A, 3rd floor) and enrol in the population register.
You will need to bring your passport, valid residence permit and original certificates, for example, your marriage certificate.
While at the local register office, fill in the Registration of Foreigners form and a Change of Address Notification form. After registration you will be issued with a Finnish personal identity number (personal ID).
Once you have your personal ID, visit the Finnish Social Insurance Institution, Kela, (address Kirkkokatu 8) to fill in an application form for a Kela card (Kela-kortti).
Thirdly, visit the police department (address Tottinkatu 9), and present your passport and valid residence permit. Here you can clarify, for example, whether your driving licence is valid for Finland.
Police (Poliisi)
Matters relating to residence permits are dealt with by the police. The police issue driving licences, personal IDs, passports, permits and licences for firearms and disabled parking permits. If you possess a driving licence issued in a country other than Finland, ask the police whether your licence is valid for Finland.
