Sudden and severe illness and accidents

In case of urgent and life-threatening attacks of illness you can call an ambulance by dialling 112. The same number is used for calling the police and fire departments.

Joint emergency duty service

In case of sudden illness you may visit your local health centre emergency room on ordinary weekdays. (See the Health page for details of Health centres). The health centres are closed in the evenings, at night, at weekends and on public holidays, with healthcare services available from the City of Oulu joint emergency duty service (Yhteispäivystys) at these times. You should call ahead and describe your problem before going to the emergency room. Calls are taken at all times of day and night, and patients are treated in order of urgency.

Mental health crises

Substance abuse and compulsive gambling

Substance abuse prevention services

Substance abuse prevention services provide advice on quitting smoking or decreasing your alcohol usage. Residents of Oulu are entitled to free treatment. Residents from other districts must obtain a payment guarantee (maksusitoumus), which is usually issued by their local social services office.

Patients under the age of 29 years are treated at the Redi 64 rehabilitation clinic for young people, while people over this age attend the A-Clinic foundation. No appointment is required, but residents from neighbouring districts must bring the payment guarantee with them. Drug addiction

The Oulun Vinkki service provides support for intravenous drug users and their families. Further information and contact details are available on the City of Oulu website in Finnish and English.

Crime

You should call the police if you become the victim of a crime or witness a crime. You may also call the emergency number 112. The Info Bank Crime page provides further details of what to do when encountering crime.
