Voluntary tenth grade (Vapaaehtoinen kymppiluokka – 10. luokka)

Tenth grade (10. luokka), or voluntary additional basic education (vapaaehtoinen kymppiluokka), is intended for young people who have completed comprehensive school but have not obtained a study place or who need more time to plan their future.

In the tenth grade pupils are able to improve the grades on their leaving certificates and acquaint themselves with working life and the different educational alternatives, thus improving their chances of being admitted to further education.

In Mikkeli, immigrants over 16 years of age can obtain additional basic education at the Otava Folk High School, which offers various kinds of tenth grade classes, a special immigrant class preparing for upper secondary school, and the opportunity to complete comprehensive school as distance learning.

Upper secondary vocational education (Toisen asteen ammatillinen koulutus)

Courses are provided for both young people and adults.

Open University of Applied Sciences and Open University (Avoin ammattikorkeakoulu ja avoin yliopisto)

Anyone at all may study at the Open University of Applied Sciences (avoin ammattikorkeakoulu) or at the Open University (avoin yliopisto), as there is no basic education requirement.

Studies can take the form of single courses or entire modules.A fee is charged for these studies, and students are not eligible for a study grant.Students study independently and are themselves responsible for their learning.
