Health Centres (Terveysasema)

Health centres include doctors’, nurses’ and public health nurses’ receptions, as well as specialist services in psychiatry, internal medicine, geriatric health care, neurology and physiatrics.

Health centre emergency services (Terveyskeskuspäivystys)

Health centres are closed in the evening and at the weekend. At these times acute illnesses and accidents are dealt with by emergency health centres (Mon - Fri 4 p.m. - 10 p.m., weekends and holidays 8 a.m. - 10 p.m.) or hospital emergency departments (24 hour). 

Adult emergency services are provided at Malmi Hospital (for inhabitants of eastern, south-eastern, north-eastern and northern districts of Helsinki) and Maria Hospital (for inhabitants of southern, western and central Helsinki).

When a Child Falls Ill

If your child should fall ill, contact the nearest health centre or call the 24-hour health counselling service on (09) 10023. 

Health centres are closed in the evening, at night and at the weekend. Emergency health care for children and adolescents under 16 years is provided at the HUCH Hospital for Children and Adolescents.

Mental Health

Helsinki residents obtain mental health services from the health centre for their own area. Health centres are able to treat mild psychological disturbances and life crises. Psychiatric outpatient clinics

In case of urgent psychiatric crises the patient or person close to the patient may make direct contact with the psychiatric outpatient clinic (Psykiatrian poliklinikka) for their area. Psychiatric outpatient clinics in Finnish, Swedish  and English

Mental health services for children and adolescents

Problems concerning children’s mental health may be directed to the local health centre, which will forward them where necessary. Mental health problems may also be discussed at a children’s clinic or with school and student health care.

Venereal diseases

Venereal disease patients in Helsinki are treated at health centres and at the Outpatient Clinic for Venereal Diseases (sukupuolitautien poliklinikka) at the HUS Skin and Allergy Hospital, for which a doctor’s referral is not necessary.
