Basic education

In Kajaani basic education is offered principally in schools maintained by the city. Compulsory education comprises basic education, i.e. classes 1-9. The city also provides special education for pupils requiring support and for immigrants.

Every child who is a permanent resident in Finland must start ten-year compulsory education the year they reach seven years of age. Compulsory education ends once basic education (perusopetus) has been completed successfully or when ten years have elapsed from the beginning of compulsory education. Lessons and the required textbooks and other learning material are provided free of charge. Pupils are provided every day with a free meal. School catering takes into account pupils’ special dietary requirements.

Basic education in Kajaani safeguards the right to good learning, development as a learner, and to culture for every Kajaani child. The task of teaching is to give the pupil the opportunity to acquire an all-round education founded on compulsory education, to include the diversity of skills and knowledge necessary in life, and preparation for continuing education. All organised teaching is based on the curriculum. After basic education there is the opportunity to apply for further education, either at upper secondary school or at a vocational institution.

Contact information for schools providing basic education may be obtained here.

Preparatory training:

Preparatory training for basic education is intended for pupils recently arrived in the country and those pupils with an immigrant background, either born in Finland or coming to Finland while under school age, who are not yet ready for basic education through lack of Finnish language skills.

Finnish language learning and introduction to key concepts and vocabulary in various subjects are essential factors in training. Allowance is made for the fact that the pupils are of various ages and have different learning abilities and learning backgrounds.

In Kajaani preparatory training for primary classes is provided in the preparatory training group closest to the pupil’s home. Preparatory training for secondary classes is arranged in the comprehensive school. In Kajaani participation in preparatory training normally lasts for one year.

Remedial teaching:

Pupils may be in need of support in their studies following on from preparatory training.  Schools organise remedial teaching for immigrant pupils in various subjects where possible.

In Kajaani there is also the opportunity to study in a remedial class for immigrant pupils. The pupil receives support in accordance with the teaching plan in the subjects where it is needed, excluding practical and art subjects which are always taught in a general class.

Finnish as a second language:

Finnish is taught as a second language to pupils whose mother tongue is other than Finnish. Immigrant pupils study Finnish in the Language and Literature classes and in their own groups. All teaching in the school supports study of the Finnish language.

Teaching of own mother tongue:

Pupils with immigrant backgrounds are provided with teaching of their own mother tongue where possible. In Kajaani teaching of the mother tongue has been arranged, for example, in Russian, Kurdish and Arabic.
