Accommodation in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area

The cost of living in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area is the highest in Finland . Accommodation is most expensive in the centre of Helsinki. Outside the city centre and in other municipalities of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area prices are slightly lower.

Approximately one third of all apartments in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area are rented, with the greatest demand for one- and two-bedroom flats in apartment blocks.

Apartments are almost invariably sold or rented unfurnished. Furnished flats for rent are rare and generally more expensive than their unfurnished counterparts.

The Finnish Youth Housing Association (Nuorisoasuntoliitto (NAL)) and the Finnish Youth Foundation (Nuorisosäätiö) are responsible for the availability of youth apartments in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area.

Availability of student apartments in the Helsinki Region is organised by the Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki Region (HOAS). More information in Finnish, Swedish and English.

Right-of-occupancy housing

Those in search of a right-of-occupancy apartment in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area ( Helsinki , Espoo , Vantaa ) must first obtain a sequence number by electronic form. Homeless persons

The Services for the Homeless website contains a compilation of services produced, purchased or supported by the cities of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area which are intended for the homeless . The site also contains other information in Finnish including services covering substance abuse and social welfare and health, and opportunities for obtaining accommodation.

Recycling centres in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area

The HSY website contains information on waste management in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. The site also contains a search engine in Finnish, Swedish and English to help you find local collection points. The search engine provides the Helsinki Metropolitan Area collection points for hazardous waste, glass, recyclable board, paper and batteries, as well as regional collection points. The regional collection points accept glass, paper, board, batteries, small metal and clothing, but not hazardous waste. The collection points also provide waste bins for plastic bags. The Sortti stations collect a wider range of waste material than the regional collection points. The Sortti stations at Ämmässuo in Espoo, and at Kivikko and Konala in Helsinki, are marked with a separate symbol on the collection point map.

HSY collection lorries make a tour of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area during the spring and will accept domestic hazardous waste, and electrical, electronic and metal scrap.

Nouto-Sortti is a pick-up service for large unwanted domestic items. An order can be placed with Nouto-Sortti for the collection of unwanted refrigerators, freezers, ovens, or sofas and other furniture. The service can be ordered from the HSY Waste Management customer service in Finnish, Swedish or English on (09) 1561 2110. A charge will be made for the pick-up service. Reuse of furniture in good condition (Hyväkuntoisten huonekalujen kierrättäminen)

Furniture in good condition, consumer electronics and goods can also be given to charity and for reuse throughout the Helsinki Region. It is worth enquiring whether the furniture or goods you have for disposal are acceptable for reuse in their present condition. You can either deliver unwanted furniture by yourself or order a pick-up service to do it for you. 

The Helsinki Metropolitan Area Reuse Centre Ltd (Pääkaupunkiseudun Kierrätyskeskus Oy) is an organisation operating for the public good on a non-profit basis. The Reuse Centre website contains information on the reuse of goods in Finnish , Swedish and English .
