When A Child Falls Ill

Kun lapsi sairastuu

If your child falls ill, you should contact your local health centre.

Health centres are closed in the evenings and weekends. Health emergencies and accidents are treated in the Emergency Duty.

Information on common illnesses of children is also available through the Lastenlääkäri service.

Children who are ill should not be taken to a day nursery. More information on the topic is available through the Lastenlääkäri service. When a child under 10 years of age suddenly falls ill, one of the parents can stay at home to care for the child for a maximum of four days. Your employment contract indicates whether you are paid a salary for these days.

Childcare services are available through the Family Federation of Finland (Väestöliitto) and the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare (Mannerheimin Lastensuojeluliitto).

If a child falls ill during the school day, his/her school will provide treatment. If it is necessary, they will take the child to a health centre.

More information on the topic is available on the Kela website.
