Violent Situations

It is important that you find help if you are faced with a violent situation. If you need immediate help from the police, phone the general emergency number: 112. No area code is required even if you are calling from a mobile phone.

There are many places where help is available for victims of violence. You can contact e.g. the Finnish Service for Crime Victims (Rikosuhripäivystys). The Finnish Service for Crime Victims telephone number is 0203-16116.

Women and girls who have become victims of violence can telephone the National Women’s Line in Finland helpline. The helpline provides service also in Swedish and English. Check the phone numbers and call times online.

Monika – the Multicultural Women’s Association (Monika–Naiset liitto ry) – provides help for immigrant women and children who have been exposed to violence. Help from Monika comes in Arabic, Dari, English, Estonian, Farsi, Finnish, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Kurdish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Swedish, Tagalog, Thai, Turkish and Vietnamese.

The on-call telephone service of the Finnish League for Human Rights provides service in Finnish, English, Turkish, Tatar, Kurdish, Dari and Farsi. 040 760 03 23 Mon to Fri from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Sexual Abuse

Sexual violence and/or abuse can at worst have a devastating and comprehensive effect on the life of the victim. It can have an impact on the work ability, mental health, relationships, parenthood and life control skills of the victim.Sex crimes are rape, forced sexual act, sexual abuse and purchase of sexual services from a minor. Rape is not an act of sex, it is a demonstration of power and dominance. Sexual abuse can also take place between partners in a relationship.

The Tukinainen Rape Crisis Centre has a free crisis help line (Tel. 0800-97899) for victims of sexual abuse. The Finnish Association of Mental Health (Suomen mielenterveysseura) has crisis centres across Finland.

Restraining Order

You can request that the police enforce a restraining order on people who are threatening or harassing you. A restraining order can be requested from the police either in writing or in person. You can also turn to social services for advice. The Police website contains a brochure on restraining orders in the following languages:

Harassment at Work

Harassment at work usually involves psychological violence. It can also entail sexual harassment, physical violence or telephone harassment. If you fall victim to harassment at work, first report the incident to your supervisor. He/she is liable to resolve the issue. If nothing is done, turn to your labour protection delegate. Also your occupational health care may be able to help.
