Residence permit, registering

If you intend to work in Finland, you will generally need a worker’s residence permit. EU citizens will need a registration certificate. Permits and registrations are handled by the Police and the Finnish Immigration Service.

 

Personal identity code

You can obtain your Finnish personal identity code from the local register office. In some cases you can submit an application to Kela or the tax office. If you register at the local register office in your home municipality, you will be entered as living in that municipality. Those who have a home municipality are entitled to use the municipal services e.g. social and health.

Tax card

You can obtain a tax card, which you must give to your employer, from the tax office. When you apply for a tax card, you must have a Finnish personal identity code. You will find information about the social security payments that are withheld from your wage on the tax office’s website

Bank account

Wages are generally paid into a bank account. In order to open one you will need official personal identification such as your passport. It will be easier to open an account if you already have a Finnish personal identity code.

Sickness insurance (Kela) card

· A sickness insurance (Kela) card shows that you are covered by Finland’s sickness insurance. Any dealings you may have with Kela will be made easier if you have a Finnish personal identity code. Additional information about social security and what it includes can be obtained from Kela.

Integration plan and assistance

An unemployed immigrant who has a home municipality in Finland and comes within the sphere of a labour market subsidy and/or social assistance is entitled to be in an integration plan and to receive assistance. In an integration plan agreement is reached on how immigrants will become familiar with their new country of residence, learn the country’s language, supplement their occupational skills and acquire information and skills.

Earnings-related pension , self-employed person’s pension insurance

An earnings-related pension will accrue from any work you do in Finland. You can find out more about pensions from the Finnish Centre for Pensions .

Accident insurance

Employers are obliged to take out accident insurance on their employees. You can find out more from the Federation of Accident Insurance Institutions.

Information about the various kinds of accommodation and looking for somewhere to live in Finland can be found on the Infopankki website

 You can look for vacant rental accommodation on the private market or via housing agency services.

A housing allowance is granted by Kela.
