If you wish to work in Finland and have a foreign degree, you can request the recognition of your degree. Recognition of a degree (tutkinnon tunnustaminen) means that it will be decided what qualification your foreign degree gives you in regards of working or applying for a study place in Finland. Recognition of a degree is subject to a charge and it is requested from the Finnish National Board of Education. If you are applying for a study place, recognition of a degree is not necessarily needed.

The Finnish National Board of Education can also grant you the equation of your foreign degree to a Finnish degree. Equation of a degree is useful for example when you are looking to find a job in Finland that requires a higher education degree.

Certain professions are regulated in Finland. A regulated profession is a job to which an applicant must have a certain degree or need to have completed certain studies. If you wish to work in a regulated profession, you need a decision from an authority who is responsible for this particular profession before you can work in this profession in Finland. The Finnish National Board of Education website contains a list of regulated professions and authorities responsible for them.

If you wish to continue your studies in Finland, credits can be transferred from foreign degrees towards some or all of the basic studies in a Finnish institution. The extent of the transfer is always down to the discretion of the educational institution in question and therefore you do not need to get your degree equated or recognised separately.
